Background on excelleRx Research Initiatives

excelleRx has been at the leading edge of developing and advocating the use of evidence to guide symptom palliation in end-of-life care. Consistent with this commitment, the Quality Outcomes team carries out retrospective studies of the company’s extensive administrative database, containing more than 50 million patient days of information, to build robust and reliable clinical decision support tools and to address key questions of interest to the community of clinicians and scientists working with patients who are approaching the end of life.

Initiatives of interest to excelleRx and colleagues in the community include:

  • Refining methods for measurement and collection of key symptom and quality of life outcomes to support hospice quality assurance and performance improvement (QAPI) initiatives;
  • Addressing important questions about symptom prevalence, predictors of symptom occurrence, and response to pharmacotherapy.

Initiatives of particular interest to excelleRx include:

  • Implementing systematic and rigorous studies of the excelleRx Medication Use Guidelines (MUGs) to substantiate their efficacy and identify opportunities for improvement;
  • Building a robust and reliable data foundation for Predictive Pharmacotherapy Outcomes System (PPOS) to enable translation of the accumulated experience of thousands of patients into evidence-based prescribing and real-time selection of pharmacotherapy using the power of that evidence.
