Joni I. Berry, BS, MS, PharmD, FAPhA , a clinical pharmacist for Hospice Pharmacia, a service of excelleRx, Inc., has published an article on the utilization of hospice care for heart disease patients.  The article appears in the Journal or Pain & Palliative Care Pharmacotherapy, Vol. 24 (1), 2010. The analysis reveals that a strikingly small percentage of heart disease patients ultimately receive hospice and palliative care.  Dr. Berry disuses several possible reasons for the low referral rate and offers several strategies to help increase hospice and palliative care for the heart disease patient population.
